In a bid to tackle the increasing presence of AI-generated music, Spotify is rolling out initiatives to help users differentiate between human and artificial artists on its platform. Starting in September, profiles and track listings of AI-generated artists will feature an “AI persona” label, making it easier for listeners to identify these virtual identities.

This new measure is part of Spotify’s strategy to ensure that real musicians do not lose exposure to AI-generated content. By default, AI personas will be omitted from personalized recommendations, aiming to protect the visibility of genuine artists. While artists have the option to self-disclose their AI status, Spotify will also employ a combination of human reviewers and AI-driven tools to detect those who do not voluntarily identify as AI personas.

The decision follows a noticeable surge in AI-generated music on the platform. Over the past year, Spotify reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks, underscoring the flood of artificial and low-quality content that is making its way onto music streaming services. This trend prompts a need for increased transparency within the industry.

As generative AI technology becomes more prevalent in the music world, Spotify recognizes that listeners are increasingly curious about whether the artists behind the tracks are real people or computer-generated entities. The company’s efforts aim to provide clarity and maintain the integrity of its music catalogue in an era where AI creativity is rapidly expanding.
