Heavy rainfall in Istanbul is intensifying, significantly raising the risk of flooding and causing potential disruptions to the city’s transportation systems. According to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center, the showers that began earlier in the morning are expected to strengthen around 11 a.m. and continue throughout the afternoon before easing up by 4 p.m.
The city’s temperatures have dropped sharply due to the arrival of cooler air, sitting at around 14°C in the morning and remaining below the usual seasonal averages for the rest of the day. This weather pattern of cold air aloft combined with warm, moisture-laden air near the surface is likely to bring about thunderstorms, lightning, and strong showers.
Meteorological authorities have issued warnings for Istanbul and several provinces in the Marmara and western Black Sea regions, cautioning residents about possible sudden flooding, strong winds, lightning, and transport disruptions. The adverse weather conditions are expected to improve by Thursday, with forecasts predicting temperatures to rise to approximately 21°C and no significant rainfall anticipated.
