In a significant step forward for conversational AI, OpenAI has unveiled GPT-Live, an advanced voice AI system designed to create more fluid and natural dialogue by processing speech and listening simultaneously. This system is built on a full-duplex framework, which allows it to respond mid-conversation with natural acknowledgments like “mhmm” or “yeah,” facilitating smoother and quicker exchanges without awkward pauses.

GPT-Live is also equipped to handle more intricate tasks. When a conversation involves complex inquiries that necessitate web searches or sophisticated reasoning, the AI can automatically delegate these tasks to a more robust AI model operating behind the scenes, all while maintaining the dialogue with the user. At its launch, these complex tasks are managed by the GPT-5.5 model, with future updates expected to include even more advanced models.

This development comes on the heels of OpenAI’s recent announcement regarding the imminent public release of its GPT-5.6 model series. This series includes the flagship Sol model, along with its Terra and Luna variants, pending final approval after undergoing additional cybersecurity evaluations.

OpenAI has already started the global rollout of two versions of these new voice models, known as GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini, to users of ChatGPT. Additionally, the company plans to extend the availability of GPT-Live through its API, which will allow developers and businesses to integrate real-time voice AI functionality into their own applications.
