The conflict in Yemen has escalated with Iran-backed Houthi forces claiming responsibility for a recent missile and drone strike on a military base in southern Saudi Arabia. The attack, which targeted weapons depots and command-and-control centres at the Sharurah military base, has intensified the ongoing clashes with Yemeni government forces. According to Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree, the strike represents a significant move in the ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, Saudi civil defence authorities have confirmed that a projectile landed near the Yemeni border, injuring two individuals and causing damage to a mosque and several nearby structures.
In response, Yemeni government forces have ramped up their offensive against Houthi positions, launching three airstrikes in the Taiz region and targeting areas near the Red Sea port city of Mocha. The renewed violence comes on the heels of a Houthi offensive last week, during which the group seized control of much of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and several strategic islands. These territorial gains have bolstered the Houthis’ strategic position near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime passage at the southern entrance of the Red Sea.
The conflict has also taken a maritime turn, with the Houthis announcing a blockade of Saudi Red Sea ports. This move has raised alarms over the security of regional shipping lanes and energy supplies, especially as the Red Sea waterway grows in importance for Saudi oil exports amid tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia, which continues to back Yemen’s internationally recognised government, finds itself in an increasingly tense situation as the Houthis, supported by Iran, exert more control over critical routes.
The escalation of hostilities has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes in search of safety. The United Nations has noted a marked increase in displacement since July, with the latest wave of fighting reportedly resulting in over 500 deaths. The growing violence threatens to exacerbate Yemen’s already dire humanitarian situation and destabilize the broader Red Sea region.
