This feature will enable users to store chats, photos, videos, and documents directly to WhatsApp’s cloud storage, offering an alternative to Apple’s iCloud. The initiative is set to provide 2GB of complimentary cloud storage for backups, with the option for users to expand their storage capacity through various paid plans. Reports suggest that these plans could start with a 50GB option, with even larger plans potentially being developed.
The new backup option is expected to be optional for users, who can continue using iCloud if they prefer. Additionally, those who initially opt for WhatsApp’s cloud storage will retain the flexibility to revert to iCloud at their convenience. A significant advantage of WhatsApp’s cloud backups is the inclusion of end-to-end encryption by default, ensuring that users’ backup data remains securely protected from unauthorized access.
Currently, this feature is undergoing testing through Apple’s TestFlight platform, which is commonly used for beta testing apps.
