President Donald Trump announced a significant shift in US policy on Monday, declaring that the United States would send additional weapons to Ukraine. This decision comes as Russia intensifies its attacks and claims new territorial gains in the ongoing conflict. The announcement directly contradicts Washington’s recent move to halt some weapons shipments, a decision that reportedly caught Ukrainian officials off guard and prompted urgent calls for clarification.
The pause in aid had presented a critical challenge for Kyiv, which is currently grappling with some of Russia’s most intense missile and drone bombardments since the war began over three years ago. Trump emphasized that the new shipments would primarily consist of “defensive weapons,” acknowledging that Ukraine is “getting hit very, very hard.” Despite his stated unhappiness with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump’s prior focus had been on pushing for peace talks, a stance that drew criticism given Putin’s unwavering demands for Ukrainian territorial concessions.
This pledge of increased arms follows Moscow’s Monday declaration of capturing its first village in Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region. This strategic advance, achieved after months of sustained pressure, was preceded by a fresh wave of large-scale Russian drone and missile attacks, specifically targeting Ukrainian military recruitment centers. Kyiv, in turn, retaliated with a drone strike on a Russian ammunition factory located in the Moscow region, signaling a tit-for-tat escalation.
The situation in Dnipropetrovsk, a crucial industrial mining territory, is described as “difficult” by Ukrainian military expert Oleksiy Kopytko, who suggests Russia aims to establish a buffer zone. Kyiv, however, has denied any Russian foothold in the region, with its military reporting successful repelling of attacks, including those near Dachne. The increased US support is a lifeline for Ukraine, as President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that air defense remains the “top priority for protecting lives,” underscoring his country’s reliance on partners to fulfill aid agreements.
