Speaking in Gyeongju, South Korea, at the APEC forum, Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a strong warning against “breaking supply chains.” His speech on Friday emphasized the need for global cooperation following a new deal with the US.
“We must adhere to the principle of joining hands rather than letting go,” Xi told the summit attendees, calling for “genuine multilateralism” and the “opening up and development of supply chains.”
This address came just a day after Xi and President Trump secured a one-year trade agreement. The pact includes the US slashing some tariffs and export controls, a significant step toward stabilizing economic ties.
As part of the deal, China committed to purchasing US soybeans and pausing fresh curbs on rare earth mineral exports. This was a key concession, as Trump had previously threatened a 100% import tax on the vital materials.
The deal also delayed a restrictive US tech measure for one year, a move strongly opposed by Beijing. Xi said teams should finalize the deal to bring “peace of mind” to the world, while Trump called their meeting “amazing.”
