President Donald Trump is heading into his Monday meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed by what he describes as unprecedented support from Arab leaders for a “special” Gaza peace plan. This regional consensus is the foundation of Trump’s strategy to convince a reluctant Netanyahu to embrace a diplomatic end to the nearly two-year war.
The U.S.-led initiative, reportedly a 21-point framework, was solidified during Trump’s meetings with Arab and Muslim-majority leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last week. The plan calls for a complete disarmament of Hamas, the release of all Israeli hostages, and a durable ceasefire, addressing the core issues of the conflict.
Trump’s public optimism about the deal has been unmistakable. “All are on board for something special, first time ever,” he wrote on Truth Social, aiming to project an image of a united front that Israel would find difficult to oppose. This diplomatic momentum is Trump’s primary tool as he prepares to persuade Netanyahu.
However, the Israeli Prime Minister has remained focused on his military objectives. His recent pledge to “finish the job” in Gaza and his skepticism toward diplomatic solutions suggest he will not be easily swayed. This sets up a crucial test of Trump’s persuasive abilities and the strength of the regional coalition he has assembled.
The plan’s viability also depends on a shared vision for Gaza’s future, which is currently lacking. The U.S. and its Arab partners envision a transitional authority leading to a reformed Palestinian Authority government, a scenario Netanyahu has rejected. The White House meeting will determine if the “special” opportunity Trump has engineered can overcome these deep-seated disagreements.
