The Toronto Blue Jays kicked off their Major League Baseball draft by selecting dynamic shortstop JoJo Parker with the eighth overall pick in the first round on Sunday. This move signals the Blue Jays’ intent to infuse their organization with high-ceiling talent capable of making an impact on multiple fronts.
Parker, an 18-year-old out of Purvis High School in Mississippi, stands at an imposing six-foot-two and weighs 200 pounds. His selection at number eight is a record for his high school, highlighting his status as a premier amateur talent in this year’s draft class.
His senior season at Purvis was nothing short of spectacular. At the plate, he was a dominant force, hitting .489 with 13 home runs and 35 RBIs, while also scoring 64 runs. His athleticism translated to the basepaths, where he swiped an impressive 30 bases, helping lead the Tornadoes to a deep run in the Class 4A state championship.
Beyond his offensive prowess, Parker also proved to be a formidable presence on the pitching mound. As a right-hander, he compiled an 8-2 record with a 2.77 ERA and recorded 89 strikeouts in 55.2 innings. While he has a commitment to Mississippi State University, the Blue Jays will now work to sign the versatile star, envisioning a bright future for him within their organization.
