Numan Kurtulmuş, the Speaker of Türkiye’s Parliament, has emphasized the potential benefits of an anticipated disarmament initiative targeting the PKK and its associated groups, suggesting it could enhance stability in Iraq and bolster regional peace efforts. During a discussion in Ankara with Heybet Halbusi, the Iraqi Parliament Speaker, Kurtulmuş noted that this initiative, slated to commence next month, might not only fortify peace and stability in Iraq but also contribute to security in Syria.
The initiative is closely tied to Türkiye’s broader objectives of establishing a “terror-free Türkiye” and a “terror-free region.” Kurtulmuş urged for increased cooperation among countries in the region to overcome longstanding divisions. He also underscored the strengthening ties between Türkiye and Iraq, highlighting agreements and memorandums concluded during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s 2024 visit to Iraq, alongside further strategic partnerships following the Iraqi Prime Minister’s visit to Türkiye in July.
A significant aspect of this bilateral cooperation is the Development Road Project. This proposed transport corridor aims to enhance connectivity between Asia and Europe by traversing Iraq and Türkiye, thereby fostering economic growth throughout the region. Kurtulmuş expressed Türkiye’s full support for speeding up the project and hoped that all its components would soon be operational.
He emphasized that this initiative is more than just an economic endeavor; it holds the potential to unite communities, cities, and cultures through cooperative efforts that are mutually beneficial. The Development Road Project is seen as a key area where Türkiye and Iraq can collaborate to achieve these broader goals.
