Nearly four years have passed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a grim milestone marked by intensifying diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. The anniversary comes as American envoys shuttle between Kyiv and Moscow seeking breakthrough agreements that have proven elusive throughout the lengthy war.
The conflict has devastated Ukrainian cities, displaced millions of people, and caused hundreds of thousands of casualties on both sides. Russia’s sustained campaign against civilian infrastructure has left Ukrainian cities vulnerable to winter conditions, with regular strikes targeting power generation and heating systems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spent recent days in intensive diplomatic consultations with European leaders, seeking to maintain Western support as negotiating pressure intensifies. He emphasized that peace must become truly durable while ending the war as quickly as possible, balancing urgency with sustainability.
Recent battlefield analysis shows Russia made its second-largest territorial gain of the entire war during November, capturing over 700 square kilometers. These advances exclude the conflict’s initial months when front lines remained highly mobile, making the recent gains particularly significant for understanding current military momentum.
Despite the long duration of fighting, fundamental questions about the war’s resolution remain unresolved. European leaders insist that Russia must not benefit from its aggression, while Russian leadership shows little indication of willingness to withdraw from occupied territories without significant concessions from Ukraine.
